The undertaking of any human activity almost always involves a more or less high sound level.
Depending on the type, duration, place and time at which it occurs, sound may be annoying,
uncomfortable or may even alter the physical or psychological well-being of living beings. In this
case, it is called noise and is considered pollution.
Noise pollution has two aspects:
- Environmental noise pollution.
- Pollution from occasional noise sources.
There are two fundamental sources of environmental noise pollution:
- Traffic, especially road traffic (generic in all cities).
- Leisure, night time and public meeting activities (which also exist in all cities) of greater
or lesser extent depending on the weather.
All noise sources are potentially sources of pollution which, unless minimum precautions are
taken, could cause occasional problems.
The noise levels in Madrid do not cause hearing problems or specific problems. The most
notable and harmful effects are those that disturb sleep and could cause illnesses in which stress
is a determining factor.
The public is deeply aware of noise pollution and it is currently the source of a large
number of complaints and claims from the public.
