What is the air quality index?

The air quality index is the tool that gives us clear, direct and quick information on the quality of the air we breathe and that effectively guarantees the right of all members of the public to access to environmental information.
The data provided by the stations in the monitoring system is assessed through the air quality index which consists of an adimensional value calculated from the values recorded in the measurement stations, taking into account the limit values set by European legislation, Royal Decree 1073/2002, Royal Decree 1796/2003 and the harmful effects to health of the following pollutants:
  • Sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ).
  • Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2).
  • Ozone (O 3).
  • Carbon monoxide (CO).
  • PM 10 particles.
A partial index is set for each of these pollutants so that the worst value of the five will define the overall index and, therefore, the quality of the air in the city of Madrid.

The index value ranges from 0 to >150 so that the higher the index, the worse the air quality. Index value 0 is for a null concentration of pollutants and the value 100 is the fixed limit above which the population must be informed to protect its health.
